In winter, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is dominated by dry and frosty continental air, which is, however, slightly humidified by the seas surrounding Sakhalin. During the winter, clear, frosty weather prevails in the city. It snows frequently. But in some years mixed precipitation and even rain is possible. Blizzards and snow storms are not uncommon, sometimes leading to disruptions in traffic and work. Most blizzards occur in January and February. Thaws may occur in any winter month in the city. Their typical duration is 1-2 days. Winter generally lasts from mid-November to early April.

Summer weather sets in mid-June to early July. Generally, it is rather unpredictable. Summers are humid and sweltering. Summer, especially July, has a lot of heavy rains and showers, which are brought by typhoons, cyclones, and frontal divisions. Autumn
Autumn in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk starts in the second decade of September and is characterized by clear, dry and relatively warm weather. The beginning of autumn is still very warm, with daytime temperatures of up to +27 °С. In early October, the average temperature drops below 10 °C, and in late October it drops below 5 °C. The first frosts occur in early October (the earliest possible from September 13). Fogs in autumn are rare. Snow cover is established in late November, but in some years it can appear from the second half of October.
